Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is a member of the Southland Conference (SLC) and competes in 14 varsity sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track and field.

Following 11 seasons as an independent, A&M-Corpus Christi enjoyed immediate success after joining the SLC in 2006. The Islander men’s basketball team won the SLC and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the school’s history.

The men’s tennis team, which won two Southland Conference championships while competing as an affiliate member since 2004, has become a dominant force in the SLC, going undefeated in conference play in the Islanders’ first two seasons as a full member. Distance runner Shadrack Songok has set records on the track, becoming the University’s first All-American and two-time national champion, winning the 5,000-10,000-meters race at the NCAA Championships. The feat earned him the SLC Athlete of the Year award in 2007.

Other conference members include Lamar University, Sam Houston State University, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas State University, the University of Texas at Arlington, the University of Texas at San Antonio, McNeese State University, Nicholls State University, Northwestern State University, Southeastern Louisiana University and the University of Central Arkansas.
